Hello fellow runners! If you've found your way to this blog, chances are you're no stranger to the frustration of knee pain during your runs. I, too, have been dealing with this issue, and I wanted to share my experience in the hope that it might help others facing similar challenges.
1. The Beginning of Knee Troubles:
A few weeks ago, I started feeling discomfort at the outer edge of both my knees. As an amateur runner, this was a cause for concern. Ignoring it, unfortunately, only made matters worse and took the charm away from any run I was doing.
2. Diagnosis: Patellofemoral Malalignment with Arthritis:
After consulting with a sports medicine specialist, I received a diagnosis that explained the pain - patellofemoral malalignment with arthritis in the patellofemoral joint. This essentially meant that the alignment of my kneecap was off, causing increased friction and wear, resulting in arthritis.
3. Running Woes: Sharp Pains and Slow Starts:
Running became an ordeal. Sharp pains, particularly during the initial 500 meters to 1 km, made each step challenging. The joy of running was replaced by the dread of the discomfort that awaited me every time I laced up my shoes. The run which was supposed to take away my mental tension itself became a tension. Post run whenever I wanted to use stairs going down, it became a mental challenge as each step of stair felts like my knee will spit out of my body.
4. Doctor's Prescription: Glucosamine and Chondroitin Tablets:
In my quest for relief, my doctor recommended a combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements. Skeptical at first, I decided to delve into understanding why these specific medications were chosen. He advised me to take the tablets 2 times a day for 2 months. He selected a particular brand as the value of these 2 components were little higher in these as compared to the one I used to take long time back.

Currently during the run, I have started to wear the Patella strap over both of my knees to control the movement of my patella during the run. It does not relieve the pain 100% but reduces the level of discomfort during my runs as it tries to keep the patella in static position as much as possible.
